Guwahati buzzed with anticipation on Wednesday as the Election Commission of India (ECI) dropped a major hint: Assam’s upcoming assembly elections could be conducted in a single phase. This decision, if finalized, would prioritize voter convenience and align with the state’s unique local conditions.

A high-level ECI team, led by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, is currently in Assam to scrutinize election preparations. After intensive meetings with state officials and representatives from various political parties, the team addressed the media, outlining their preliminary assessments.

The commission also suggested that polls might be scheduled before Assam’s iconic Rongali Bihu festival. This timing aims to maximize voter turnout and ensure a peaceful electoral process, allowing citizens to participate without clashing with cultural celebrations.

Speaking to journalists, Kumar emphasized the ECI’s commitment to voter-centric elections. ‘We are meticulously reviewing all arrangements, security measures, and logistical setups before announcing the final schedule,’ he stated. The decision will factor in voter ease, weather patterns, and administrative readiness.

In a technological leap, the ECI announced 100% webcasting at all polling stations in Assam for the first time. This move is designed to enhance transparency and uphold the integrity of free and fair elections. Real-time voter turnout data will also be shared every two hours on polling day to curb misinformation and keep the public informed.

The visiting team is conducting a thorough review of security protocols, deployment of central armed police forces, and district-level preparations. This visit forms a critical part of pre-poll groundwork, addressing concerns raised by stakeholders and gauging on-ground realities.

Reaffirming their pledge, the ECI vowed to deliver peaceful, transparent, and inclusive elections in Assam, empowering every eligible voter to exercise their democratic rights fearlessly.
