Guwahati, February 16 – Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma dropped a political bombshell on Monday, claiming that a significant section of Congress leaders in the state are in touch with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as assembly elections loom large.

Reacting to the recent resignation of former state Congress president Bhupen Borah, Sarma asserted his close connections with leaders across parties. ‘I am in touch with every Congress leader,’ he declared confidently. ‘If we make it clear that there’s space in BJP, all Hindu Congress leaders will flock to us.’

Sarma painted a picture of a Congress party gripped by insecurity and confusion as polls approach. He criticized the opposition for failing to present a clear ideological direction or robust leadership structure, leading to growing discontent among its ranks.

The Chief Minister highlighted BJP’s organizational strength and governance record as key attractions for defectors. ‘People are joining BJP because they see stability, development, and a clear roadmap for the future,’ he said. He emphasized how the ruling party is steadily expanding its base across diverse communities in Assam.

Taking aim at the opposition, Sarma pointed to repeated resignations, public disagreements, and uncertainty as signs of Congress’s weakening grip. ‘They lack faith in their leadership and electoral prospects,’ he remarked.

Sarma reiterated that his BJP-led government remains focused on development and welfare, prioritizing job creation, infrastructure growth, and social schemes over political gamesmanship.

Congress in Assam is indeed facing internal turmoil, with senior exits and defection rumors swirling ahead of the polls. Analysts view Sarma’s statements as a calculated move to bolster BJP’s position and pile pressure on rivals in this crucial electoral battleground.
