In a landmark move for early childhood education, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu inaugurated the state’s first Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) Center in Doimukh, Papum Pare district, on Thursday. This initiative aligns seamlessly with the National Education Policy 2020 and the central government’s Nipun Bharat Mission, aiming to equip every child with essential reading and math skills by the end of Grade 3.
The center stands out as a pioneering effort tailored to Arunachal’s unique cultural landscape. Speaking at the event, Khandu emphasized that foundational skills form the bedrock of all future learning. ‘Children who struggle with basic comprehension or arithmetic in early grades risk falling behind permanently,’ he warned, positioning the FLN Center as a transformative hub for structured, play-based, child-centric teaching in government schools.
Designed with activity-driven methods, the facility promotes mother tongue instruction to enhance understanding. Continuous assessments and remedial support ensure personalized progress, while teacher training and community involvement amplify its reach. Senior education officials highlighted literacy components like storytelling for oral language, phonics for reading, guided comprehension, dictation, and writing drills.
A customized Android board with CBSE-aligned digital lessons boosts interactive learning. For numeracy, the concrete-pictorial-abstract approach builds number sense and arithmetic proficiency, fostering problem-solving and peer learning. Adding cultural depth, a heritage corner introduces children to Arunachal’s tribal traditions and ancestral knowledge, rooting education in local identity.
This center promises to revolutionize primary education outcomes across the state, setting a model for inclusive, effective schooling that honors both national goals and regional heritage.
