In a dramatic midday showdown, armed robbers stormed a Bank of India branch in Jharkhand’s Godda district, only to be thwarted by vigilant staff. The failed heist in Mahagama area left one security guard wounded from gunfire, as the criminals fled empty-handed after a brief exchange of shots.
The incident unfolded at the Kenchua Chowk branch around noon on Monday. Four masked assailants burst in, firing two rounds into the air to sow panic among customers and employees. Eyewitnesses reported the gang attempting to snatch a rifle from guard Vinod Kumar Singh, who sustained a bullet injury in the scuffle. Quick medical aid was provided on-site before he was rushed to the district hospital for advanced treatment.
Bank manager’s swift action proved decisive. Hearing the gunfire, he triggered the alarm and sealed the locker section within seconds. This prevented the robbers from accessing cash counters or valuables. Overwhelmed by the fortified security response, the perpetrators abandoned their plan and escaped on two-wheelers.
Mahagama police arrived promptly, launching an intensive manhunt. Teams are scouring nearby villages and border areas, given the region’s proximity to Bihar. CCTV footage from the bank and surrounding spots is under forensic analysis to identify the suspects. ‘We have solid leads and expect arrests soon,’ a senior officer assured.
This border zone has seen similar threats before, prompting heightened patrols. Extra forces have been deployed to reassure the public and deter future attempts. The event underscores the critical role of trained security in modern banking, turning a potential tragedy into a tale of resilience.
