Assam’s AIUDF MLA, Aminul Islam, is set for release after the Gauhati High Court on Thursday overturned his detention under the National Security Act (NSA). Islam, who represents the Dhing constituency, has been incarcerated for over seven months. The judicial directive came from a division bench comprising Justices Kalyan Rai Surana and Suresh Majumdar, who found the grounds for his detention invalid. Islam’s arrest on April 14 was precipitated by his controversial statements, which allegedly drew parallels between terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir and a supposed government conspiracy. His remarks, which reportedly implicated high-ranking officials, incited significant public backlash and accusations of fueling communal disharmony. The emergence of a video, purportedly showing Islam making objectionable comments and defending those involved in the Pahalgam attack, was a key factor for the police in imposing the NSA. The Superintendent of Police in Nagaon had indicated that this footage directly led to the detention. The AIUDF had previously distanced itself from his statements, deeming them unsuitable for the prevailing sensitive circumstances. The High Court’s decision marks the conclusion of his nearly eight-month incarceration, pending final release procedures.
