New Delhi is buzzing with anticipation as Ramadan begins today, marking a sacred month of fasting, prayer, and reflection for Muslims worldwide. In a bold appeal, AIMIM Delhi unit president Shoaib Jamei has urged the city government to shut down all liquor shops within the capital during this holy period.

Posting on social media platform X on Thursday, Jamei emphasized the need for sensitivity towards religious sentiments. ‘We appeal to the Delhi government to close all liquor shops inside Delhi during the sacred month of Ramadan. Ban the sale and consumption of alcohol in public places,’ he wrote. He drew a parallel to the closures of non-vegetarian shops during Sawan, arguing for equal respect to Muslim traditions.

Ramadan, announced yesterday by Shahi Imam Syed Shaban Bukhari from Delhi’s historic Jama Masjid, involves Muslims fasting from dawn to dusk, performing special prayers, and engaging in acts of charity. The month is revered as a time of mercy, forgiveness, and salvation.

Communities come alive with iftar gatherings breaking the fast, suhoor meals before dawn, Taraweeh prayers, and Quran recitations. Emphasis is placed on helping the needy, fostering social harmony, and spiritual growth.

The call comes amid widespread greetings from national leaders. Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished ‘Ramadan Mubarak’ on X, hoping it strengthens unity and brings peace and prosperity everywhere. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi echoed similar sentiments, praying for peace, prosperity, and good health for all.

As Delhi prepares for the holy month, Jamei’s demand highlights ongoing debates on balancing religious observances with urban regulations. Will the government respond to this plea for accommodation? The coming days will reveal the city’s approach to interfaith respect.
