New Delhi erupted in political fervor on Friday as Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supporters and legislators staged a massive demonstration outside the Delhi Assembly. The protest was sparked by the alleged barring of opposition MLAs from entering the premises, a move AAP branded as outright authoritarianism by the BJP-led government.

Led by Delhi AAP chief Saurabh Bharadwaj, hundreds of party workers gathered, chanting slogans in support of former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. ‘Kejriwal, stand firm, we’re with you!’ echoed through the streets, highlighting the party’s unwavering solidarity amid escalating tensions.

The flashpoint revolves around Kejriwal’s summons to appear before the Assembly’s Privilege Committee. AAP leaders accused authorities of deliberately blocking opposition lawmakers and journalists from the complex, raising serious questions about democratic transparency.

Bharadwaj didn’t hold back, lambasting the BJP for refusing live streaming of the committee proceedings. ‘They’re terrified Kejriwal might expose their political games,’ he declared. He pointed out this unprecedented scenario: a legislative panel summoning its own former Speaker and Chief Minister, a first in India’s history.

Under AAP’s previous tenure, Assembly committees operated with full openness, inviting media to witness proceedings. Bharadwaj emphasized that such bodies function as ‘mini-houses,’ where transparency is non-negotiable. Blocking media and MLAs, he argued, violates core democratic norms.

Leader of Opposition Atishi joined the chorus, criticizing the government for fixating on Kejriwal instead of Delhi’s pressing woes. Pollution choking the air, pothole-riddled roads, overflowing sewers, water shortages—these are the real battles, she said, yet the BJP remains mired in vendettas.

‘In just one year, they’ve wrecked Delhi’s progress,’ Atishi charged, predicting public backlash. AAP Chief Whip Sanjeev Jha echoed her, urging focus on Yamuna cleanup, basic amenities, and development. ‘Delhiites demand answers: where’s the progress?’ he questioned.

As the protests intensified, the standoff underscores deepening rifts in Delhi’s political landscape. With elections looming, AAP’s aggressive stance signals a battle for public trust, framing the BJP as out of touch with ground realities. The coming days will reveal if this pressure tactic yields results or fuels further polarization.
