    New Delhi buzzed with international energy as 42 chiefs from election management bodies worldwide gathered for the plenary session of the International Conference on Democracy and Election Management (IICDEM-2026). Held at Bharat Mandapam, this high-level forum tackled the pressing global challenges facing electoral processes today.

    Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alongside Election Commissioners Dr. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Dr. Vivek Joshi, inaugurated the session. The event drew around 60 international delegates, including ambassadors and high commissioners, underscoring its global significance.

    Participants delved into critical issues like fake news, cyber threats, voter trust erosion, and resource shortages plaguing elections everywhere. Leaders shared firsthand experiences, highlighting the need for more inclusive, transparent, and technology-driven voting systems.

    India, in its role as chair of International IDEA for 2026, outlined key priorities to strengthen democratic frameworks. The discussions emphasized collaborative strategies to combat misinformation and enhance electoral integrity.

    Running from January 21 to 23, IICDEM-2026 stands as India’s largest platform uniting experts, policymakers, and election officials. It fosters global cooperation, best practice exchanges, and bolsters democracy worldwide. Delegates expressed optimism that such dialogues will fortify election systems and safeguard democratic values for the future.
