Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam, confirmed the arrest of 16 individuals for illegally slaughtering cattle on Eid-ul-Adha. The state government recovered cattle parts from several locations and identified five illegal slaughtering sites in the Barak Valley. Sarma stated that while religious freedom is protected, maintaining law and order is also crucial, and action will be taken against all those who violate the law. The Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021, places restrictions on cattle slaughter in certain areas. Protests and road blockades occurred in Hojai, with confrontations between protesters and the police. Investigations are underway regarding incidents of alleged meat being thrown at premises in different areas including Cotton University.
