In a heart-wrenching yet profoundly inspiring act, a 10-month-old baby girl from Kerala has made history as the state’s youngest organ donor following a tragic road accident. Elin Sherin Abraham, hailing from Mallapally in Pathanamthitta district, was declared brain dead after the mishap. Amid unimaginable grief, her parents chose to donate her organs, offering life to others in desperate need.
This selfless decision has touched hearts across Kerala. Elin’s kidneys, liver, and heart valves are being transplanted. Her two kidneys will save a 10-year-old boy undergoing treatment at SAT Hospital, affiliated with Thiruvananthapuram Medical College. The organs are being transported by road to ensure timely transplantation.
Kerala’s Health Minister Veena George praised the family’s courage on social media. ‘Losing a child is an unimaginable tragedy,’ she wrote. ‘Yet, by opting for organ donation, Elin Sherin’s parents have transformed their personal sorrow into hope for families awaiting life-saving transplants. Their act highlights the growing awareness of organ donation in Kerala and its life-affirming impact.’
The minister expressed solidarity with the grieving family, noting that their decision reflects tremendous strength and humanity even in the darkest hour. While nothing can compensate for their loss, knowing Elin’s organs will give new life to other children brings some solace.
‘Elin Sherin will be remembered, as will her parents’ quiet strength,’ George added. ‘In the most difficult time, they chose compassion over despair and life over loss.’ This story underscores the power of organ donation and the enduring human spirit in Kerala.
