In a major boost for Tamil Nadu’s healthcare infrastructure, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the first phase of AIIMS Madurai on February 28. The event in Thoppur, Madurai, marks a milestone for one of the state’s most anticipated medical projects, long delayed by land acquisition hurdles and funding disputes.
Announced ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, AIIMS Madurai has been a flashpoint in political debates between the central and state governments. BJP sources confirmed the PM’s visit, highlighting his approval to kickstart initial operations during the trip.
Executive Director M. Hanumant Rao revealed that the campus is nearly ready after years of slow progress. Partial services are expected to roll out by March, with students from a temporary facility in Ramanathapuram shifting to the permanent site. Academic activities will commence from the 2026-27 session.
Select hospital blocks and basic medical services will open to the public, allowing the institute to operate at limited but functional capacity. This development holds significant political weight ahead of the upcoming Tamil Nadu assembly elections.
Ruling DMK has repeatedly accused the Centre of announcing the project without ensuring timely execution. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin recently criticized the delays, asserting the state’s right to swift implementation of critical health infrastructure.
PM Modi’s itinerary may include inaugurating other completed development projects and addressing an NDA public meeting with allies. BJP leaders believe this timing could give the alliance a strong edge, showcasing the Centre’s commitment to healthcare and growth in the region.
While the full schedule is pending, the Madurai event is poised to draw statewide attention, underscoring a new chapter in Tamil Nadu’s medical landscape.
