Health officials in New Zealand have confirmed two new cases of measles in Auckland, just three weeks after the country declared its most recent outbreak over. The cases occur within a single household and are linked to recent international travel. The individuals arrived in Auckland on Singapore Airlines flight SQ281 on February 17. Health New Zealand is currently conducting urgent contact tracing for passengers on that flight and individuals who visited Auckland International Airport and Waitakere Hospital’s emergency department during specific timeframes. Measles is a highly contagious viral disease that spreads through respiratory droplets and can remain airborne for up to two hours. Symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, and a characteristic rash. Vaccination remains the most effective protection against the virus, which caused over 100,000 deaths globally in 2023, primarily among children under five years of age.
