In the heart of Tamil Nadu’s poultry powerhouse, Namakkal district has ramped up biosecurity measures following a statewide advisory on avian influenza. Reports of unusual bird deaths in parts of the state have poultry farmers and officials on edge, even though no outbreaks have been detected locally.
Namakkal stands as one of India’s top egg production and export hubs, making vigilance critical. Officials emphasize that strict monitoring is essential to prevent the highly contagious virus from infiltrating these well-managed farm ecosystems. With massive operations involving constant movement of people, vehicles, and goods, even minor lapses could spell disaster.
In response, farms have intensified cleaning campaigns, restricted entry to essential personnel only, and implemented rigorous vehicle disinfection protocols. All activities align with guidelines from veterinary colleges and the animal husbandry department. Disinfection frequency has doubled—from every 15 days to weekly—ensuring layered protection for this vital industry.
Valson Parmeshwaran, secretary of the All India Poultry Product Exporters Association, noted that Namakkal’s poultry belt adheres to biosecurity norms year-round but escalates precautions during alerts. ‘Farmers, owners, and officials collaborate closely, tightening entry controls and boosting hygiene to keep the disease at bay,’ he said.
A poultry farmer from nearby Tirupur highlighted how controlled environments in commercial farms significantly reduce infection risks compared to open spaces. Veterinary doctors from the animal husbandry department are conducting routine inspections, with daily visits planned if any concerns arise. Senior officials reassure that the district remains safe, but sustained alertness is key to safeguarding Namakkal’s essential poultry sector.
