Aizawl, February 16: Mizoram’s ambitious push towards universal healthcare has achieved a major milestone, with the Mizoram Universal Health Care Scheme (MUHCS) now covering more than 11.55 lakh beneficiaries. Health department officials announced this on Monday, highlighting the scheme’s rapid expansion in providing accessible medical services across the state.
In a key meeting chaired by Chief Minister Lalduhoma, the scheme’s operating committee reviewed progress and outlined future strategies. The Chief Minister praised Health Minister Lalrinpuii and MUHCS officials for their dedicated efforts, noting that their work has significantly boosted public confidence in government health services.
According to officials, approximately 2.88 lakh families—including general households, pensioners, government employees, and beneficiaries of Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY)—have been registered. This enrollment translates to health coverage for nearly 11.55 lakh individuals, marking a comprehensive safety net for the state’s population.
In the financial year 2026-27 so far, about 29 percent of registered families have filed medical claims, accounting for roughly seven percent of total beneficiaries. The average approved payment per patient stands at Rs 15,106, reflecting efficient claim processing.
Notably, around 70 percent of claims stem from treatments in government hospitals, underscoring growing trust in public facilities. However, higher-value claims from private hospitals are common for severe illnesses, indicating the scheme’s role in handling complex cases.
The meeting emphasized strengthening government hospitals and prioritizing treatment in government or empanelled facilities wherever possible. Clearer referral guidelines for non-empanelled hospitals in emergencies or life-saving situations were also discussed.
Financially, the scheme has received about Rs 154 crore this year, with an additional Rs 48 crore expected. Over 83,682 claims worth Rs 126 crore have been settled, while claims amounting to Rs 38 crore are under review for prompt release.
Despite rules mandating payments within 30 days to empanelled hospitals, the state government is releasing funds weekly to avoid any disruptions. Looking ahead, the committee approved measures to streamline processes, establish pharma depots for affordable medicines, and prevent duplicate enrollments in the coming fiscal year.
The meeting was attended by Chief Minister’s advisor T.B.C. Lalvenchhunga and other committee members, signaling strong governmental commitment to healthcare reforms.
