Faculty shortage stalls Tura Medical College in Meghalaya

The proposed Tura Medical College in Meghalaya is struggling to meet National Medical Commission (NMC) staffing standards. While the college needs 97 teaching personnel to admit 50 MBBS students each year, only 37 qualified staff members are currently on the roster. Officials highlighted the gap during a review meeting chaired by the Health and Family Welfare Commissioner. The department has been searching for eligible doctors, issuing three separate recruitment advertisements, and consulting local practitioners to address specialist shortages. Despite these efforts, the shortfall remains significant, prompting a recommendation to complete the 150‑bed and 80‑bed blocks of the Tura Civil Hospital so they can serve patients while the college ramps up its faculty.
