Dhaka, Oct 2 – The measles epidemic in Bangladesh has intensified, with four additional children dying on Friday. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (DGHS) recorded these deaths within the previous 24 hours. One death is confirmed as measles-related, while the other three are classified as suspected measles deaths. The confirmed death count remains at 102, and suspected deaths have risen to 1,012, bringing the total death toll to 1,114 this year.
In the same period, DGHS logged 1,221 new suspected measles cases, increasing the national suspected case total to 194,084. Twenty‑one new confirmed cases were also identified, lifting the cumulative confirmed case tally to 21,623.
Health experts have warned that gaps in routine vaccination and delays in hospital management are fuelling the resurgence. Identification of infected children is often late, and isolation measures are not consistently applied.
Public‑health specialist Mushhtak Hussain explained that immunity typically develops three to four weeks after vaccination, meaning the current wave of infections, hospitalisations and deaths could persist for another month.
An international report released earlier this year described the 2026 measles spread in Bangladesh as one of the country’s most severe public‑health emergencies, emphasizing that the disease is preventable through adequate immunisation.
