Mumbai’s spotlight is currently on actress Zoya Afroz, whose gripping performance in the web series ‘Taskari’ has her making waves across entertainment circles. At a recent screening of the silent film ‘Gandhi Talks’, Zoya opened up to IANS about her experiences in the industry, firmly debunking claims of religious discrimination.
The event celebrated ‘Gandhi Talks’, a poignant silent film scored by the legendary A.R. Rahman. During her interaction, Zoya dismissed Rahman’s recent comments on communal issues in the industry. ‘My personal journey so far hasn’t faced any barriers due to my faith,’ she asserted confidently. ‘I hope it stays that way. India thrives on unity in diversity, and we must preserve that spirit.’
Delving deeper into cinema’s role, Zoya emphasized its mirror-like reflection of society. ‘Films portray life as it is,’ she said. ‘If a movie isn’t suitable for children, it shouldn’t be shown to them. That’s why we have certification systems – they should remain intact.’
‘Gandhi Talks’, directed by Kishore Belhekar, weaves a satirical tale around the irony of Mahatma Gandhi’s image on currency notes versus his timeless ideals. The story follows a young man grappling with financial hardships, whose life takes a dramatic turn with the arrival of a thief. Through sharp wit, it questions societal values and moral compasses.
The ensemble cast shines with talents like Aditi Rao Hydari, Vijay Sethupathi, Arvind Swamy, and Siddharth Jadhav, promising a thought-provoking cinematic experience that blends silence with profound messages.
