In a strong endorsement of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s recent remarks, Swami Gopalacharya Maharaj, president of the Akhil Bharatiya Sant Samiti in Rishikesh, has affirmed that not just anyone can ascend to the revered position of Shankaracharya. This statement comes amid growing controversy surrounding Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati’s claim to the title, particularly highlighted during the ongoing Magh Mela.

Swami Gopalacharya emphasized the sanctity of the Shankaracharya seat, describing it as the pinnacle of honor in Sanatan Dharma. ‘This is the highest and most respectable position in our eternal faith,’ he declared. ‘No ordinary individual can occupy it. Our organization, which has been safeguarding the interests of saints across India for over three decades, stands firmly by CM Yogi’s assertion.’

The debate intensified when questions arose over Swami Avimukteshwaranand’s stance on sensitive issues like cow slaughter. Gopalacharya expressed concern that such positions cast doubt on his legitimacy. ‘Society has accepted him thus far, but it is the duty of the saints to verify true worthiness. Followers of the Shankaracharya tradition are deeply worried,’ he added.

Highlighting unity in turbulent times, the swami noted Yogi Adityanath’s own saintly background. ‘As a saint himself at the helm of governance, Yogi ji should rise above differences. Atheistic forces are relentlessly attacking Sanatan Dharma today. We must set aside internal disputes and present a united front against them.’

Echoing similar sentiments, Swami Nirmal Das Maharaj supported Yogi’s view from both constitutional and practical standpoints. ‘Not everyone can become a Shankaracharya, but the government cannot decide who is. That authority rests with bodies like the Kashi Vidwat Parishad,’ he clarified.

He also referenced past incidents under the Akhilesh Yadav regime, including a lathi charge, suggesting it might have been a constitutional response to perceived irregularities. ‘However, the current situation is entirely unwarranted and should not have escalated this way,’ Swami Nirmal Das concluded.

This exchange underscores the delicate balance between religious authority, political leadership, and traditional protocols in India’s vibrant spiritual landscape. As discussions continue at the Magh Mela, the saintly fraternity calls for clarity and cohesion to protect age-old traditions.
