In a significant development, the Supreme Court has granted interim bail to renowned filmmaker Vikram Bhatt and his wife Shwetambari Bhatt in a high-profile 30 crore rupees fraud case. The court imposed strict conditions, directing the couple to repay the defrauded amount at the earliest.
The duo approached the apex court after their bail plea was rejected by the Udaipur Sessions Court. During today’s hearing, a bench led by the Chief Justice issued notices to the Rajasthan government and ordered their release on bail bonds. The court mandated full cooperation with the ongoing investigation, residence in Delhi during the probe, and surrender of passports to the police. The next hearing is scheduled for Thursday.
The case stems from a deal gone sour with Dr. Ajay Murdia, founder of Indira Group of Companies. Murdia met Bhatt to produce a biopic on his wife, leading to agreements for four films. He invested 44.29 crores, but after partial shooting, Bhatt allegedly backed out and refused refunds despite repeated demands.
Frustrated, Murdia filed a complaint, escalating the matter to court. Vikram Bhatt’s prior bail attempt in Udaipur failed. Separately, he faces another fraud allegation involving 13.5 crores from film investments, probed by the Economic Offences Wing following a businessman’s complaint on January 24.
This ruling offers temporary relief but underscores the seriousness of the charges. As the investigation unfolds, Bollywood watches closely how this scandal impacts Bhatt’s career, known for hits like Raaz and 1920. The couple’s compliance with court orders will be crucial in the coming days.
