Kayoze Irani’s ‘Sarzameen’ offers a unique take on themes of family, radicalization, and the echoes of the film ‘Shakti’. The film uses plot twists that are intended to shock the audience. Kajol plays the mother of a radicalized Kashmiri boy, and Prithviraj plays the army officer father. Early in the film, the audience gets a glimpse into the family dynamic and the strained relationship between the parents and the child. The film’s examination of radicalization, and family dynamics offers some noteworthy moments, particularly in the performances of Prithviraj and Ibrahim Ali Khan. Although the film attempts to be daring and original, the film falls short of the visual and storytelling prowess of films such as ‘Roja’ and ‘Mission: Kashmir’.
