New Delhi’s courts have once again turned down bail for Bollywood comedian Rajpal Yadav in a long-standing cheque bounce saga that has kept him behind bars in Tihar Jail. On Thursday, the Delhi High Court heard his plea but refused interim relief, issuing notices to Murlidhar Projects instead.
Rajpal, known for his comic timing in hits like ‘Hungama’ and ‘Chup Chup Ke,’ sought temporary release to attend his niece’s wedding in Shahjahanpur. However, the court held off on a final decision, citing the need for the opposing party’s response.
His lawyer, Bhaskar Upadhyay, explained that the hearing was deferred partly because he needs to meet Yadav in jail to finalize payment instructions. ‘Rajpal has never denied the debt from the Rs 5 crore investment in his 2010 directorial venture ‘Ata Pata Lapata.’ The company had previously refused repayment offers,’ Upadhyay told reporters.
The case stems from a 2012 agreement gone sour. Yadav’s film flopped financially, leading to bounced cheques worth crores. Under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, proceedings dragged on despite multiple court opportunities for settlement. He surrendered on February 4 as ordered.
Already serving three months, Yadav’s team claims Rs 2.5 crore has been paid out of Rs 5 crore. A crucial hearing is set for February 16, where the court may decide on full resolution or further custody. This development underscores the perils actors face when mixing art with finance in Bollywood’s high-stakes world.
As fans await justice, the comic’s ordeal highlights how legal battles can sideline even seasoned stars from family milestones and silver screen comebacks.
