MUMBAI: The Odia film industry mourns the sudden loss of acclaimed music director and composer Abhijeet Majumdar, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 54 after a prolonged battle with illness. His death has cast a pall of gloom over Odisha’s vibrant music scene, where he was revered as a pioneer who reshaped regional cinema soundtracks.

Majumdar had been fighting severe health issues for months, receiving treatment at AIIMS Bhubaneswar. His condition deteriorated sharply on Saturday night, leading to life support, but doctors could not save him. Medical reports indicate he suffered from hypertension, hypothyroidism, and chronic liver disease, which relentlessly worsened his state.

Tributes poured in from across the Odia entertainment world. Artists, singers, and filmmakers took to social media to honor his legacy. BJD spokesperson Lenin Mohanty posted on X: ‘The passing of great music director Abhijeet Majumdar is a massive loss not just to Odisha but to the entire music world. His melodies will live forever in our hearts.’

Born on September 11, 1971, Majumdar burst onto the scene in the early 2000s, infusing Odia music with fresh energy during a time when regional films sought innovative sounds. His compositions blended simplicity, deep emotion, and mass appeal. Hits from films like ‘Love Story’, ‘Sister Sridevi’, ‘Golmal Love’, ‘Sundargarh Ra Salman Khan’, and ‘Shriman Surdas’ remain fan favorites. Over his career, he composed more than 700 songs for films, albums, and regional projects.

In his personal life, Majumdar is survived by his wife Ranjeeta and a son. The industry reflects on a man whose tunes captured the soul of Odisha, ensuring his music endures beyond his untimely departure.
