International Theater Institute (ITI) started celebrating this day in the year 1982. This day has been dedicated to Georges Noverre, who is called the magician of dance. International Dance Day 2024: Types of classical dance styles

Bharatnatyam- Bharatnatyam of Tamil Nadu is one of the oldest dances. Kathak- Kathak is a special dance of North India. It shows stories from mythology, history and everyday life. Odissi- Odissi is one of the major classical dance forms which originated in the temples of Odisha. Kuchipudi- Originating from Andhra Pradesh, Kuchipudi is a classical dance form that combines dance, drama and music. Its roots are in ancient Sanskrit texts like Natya Shastra. Manipuri- Also known as Manipuri Raas Leela, Manipuri is a classical dance form known for its grace, fluid movements and devotion to Lord Krishna. Mohiniyattam- Mohiniyattam is a classical dance of Kerala. The name Mohiniyattam means “dance of Mohini”, the female sorceress incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Kathakali- Kathakali is a unique Indian dance-drama from Kerala. This classical dance is known for its bold make-up and elaborate costumes which can weigh up to 12 kilograms. The translation of the word “Kathakali” is “story-drama”. Sattriya Dance- Sattriya originated in the Vaishnav monasteries of Assam in the 16th century. Initially, this dance form was performed only by those living in Vaishnav monasteries, but later it was adopted by other non-monastic artists as well. Chhau-Chhau is a semi-classical Indian folk dance. It involves a blend of martial arts and storytelling. Chhau is taught only to male dancers, but now women in women’s troupes are also learning it.
