Mumbai’s cinematic pride took a hit as ‘Homebound’, starring Ishaan Khatter and Vishal Jethwa, failed to secure a nomination in the Best International Feature Film category at the 2026 Oscars. The announcement came as a disappointment to fans and the team alike, but actor Vishal Jethwa turned it into a moment of inspiration.
On Friday, Vishal shared a heartfelt note on Instagram, rallying his team with words of resilience. ‘It’s disappointing not to make it to the Oscar nominations,’ he wrote, acknowledging the setback. Yet, he quickly pivoted to positivity: ‘Real failure isn’t in losing, but in not trying. Our entire ‘Homebound’ team has given it our all from day one. I’m proud we reached the top 15.’
Vishal expressed immense gratitude to director Neeraj Ghaywan, producers Jogi and Karan Johar, and the whole crew. He extended special love to co-star Ishaan Khatter, Janhvi Kapoor, and the ‘Homebound’ family. Ending on a poetic note, he quoted his guru Shoaib Khan’s famous doha: ‘The boat doesn’t cross by fearing the waves; those who try never fail.’
‘Homebound’ had earlier made it to the top 15 shortlist but couldn’t crack the final five. Directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, the film follows two childhood friends, Shoaib (Ishaan) from a Muslim background and Chandan (Vishal) from a Dalit community, both dreaming of becoming police officers. Their journey is marred by poverty, caste discrimination, and systemic hurdles, with Janhvi in a pivotal role.
The movie premiered to acclaim at Cannes and Toronto International Film Festivals, earning standing ovations abroad. Though the Oscar dream fades, ‘Homebound’ remains a testament to Indian storytelling’s global potential. Vishal’s post reminds us that recognition is valuable, but perseverance defines true success.
