Celebrating its 23rd anniversary, ‘Dil Hai Tumhaara,’ directed by Kundan Shah, reinterprets the essence of Bimal Roy’s ‘Sujata.’ The film, initially conceived by Raj Kumar Santoshi, is a romantic comedy that blends sweet, emotional moments within a polished narrative. Preity Zinta portrays the ‘untouchable’ daughter, a role echoing Nutan’s in the original film. Shah’s narrative introduces a contemporary, melodramatic layer, where Shalu (Zinta) is the illegitimate daughter of her mother. The film’s first half features comedic sequences led by Zinta. Arjun Rampal, playing her boss, attempts to match Zinta’s lively performance. Shah, known for his romantic comedies like ‘Kabhi Haan Kabhi Na,’ employs Hollywood-style song sequences and courtship games to showcase Zinta and Rampal. One scene involves the pair weaving their lyrics in an office setting. The first half highlights Zinta’s comedic prowess. The second half adopts a sacrificial theme, echoing ‘Sujata.’ Despite the familiar plot, the second half is handled with a certain level of sensitivity. The transition from comedy to drama is evident. The antagonists’ actions are somewhat clichéd. The film is heavily focused on Zinta’s character. Rekha’s character appears underutilized. Mahima Chowdhary, Zinta’s stepsister, struggles to give substance to her role. ‘Dil Hai Tumhaara’ is characterized by a soft heart. While the pace slows at the end, the film remains captivating. Kundan Shah’s effort attempts to create meaningful moments within the standard structure. Jehangir Chowdhury’s camerawork, combined with the cast, makes ‘Dil Hai Tumhaara’ a pleasant cinematic experience.
