Vijayeta Basu, the marketing manager sister of Bollywood celebrity Bipasha Basu, has been the target of a cunning cyber fraud, resulting in a financial loss of Rs 1.8 lakh. The scam capitalized on a common inconvenience: missed package deliveries.
The incident unfolded when Vijayeta received a text message alleging a second failed attempt at parcel delivery, with instructions to confirm details via a provided link. In a moment of trust, she followed the link, which led to a fraudulent page. Here, she was persuaded to enter her credit card information, ostensibly for a small delivery charge. This seemingly minor action opened the door for significant financial theft.
Her ICICI Bank credit card was subsequently used to make a substantial booking at the Hyatt Regency in France, costing EUR 1,730.76, which amounts to about Rs 1.79 lakh. The speed at which the fraudsters operated after obtaining her details is indicative of a well-organized operation.
Upon discovering the unauthorized transaction, Vijayeta acted decisively. She immediately secured her finances by blocking the compromised credit card. Subsequently, she escalated the matter by filing a complaint on the cybercrime portal and then officially with the police. An FIR was registered at Mumbai’s NM Joshi Marg Police Station on November 2, 2025, under sections 66(C) and 66(D) of the IT Act. This incident underscores the critical need for public awareness regarding phishing and online security practices, especially concerning delivery-related communications.
