MUMBAI: The Indian entertainment world is in mourning following the sudden demise of Maroof Raza, a prominent defense expert and former military officer, who passed away at 67 after a prolonged battle with cancer. His death on Thursday sent shockwaves through national security circles and beyond.

Actor Anupam Kher, a close friend of Raza, took to social media platform X to express his profound grief. Sharing a poignant photo of the late expert, Kher reminisced about their deep bond forged over discussions on critical issues like national security and counter-terrorism.

‘Heartbroken to hear about Maroof Raza’s passing. A dear friend, a brave soul, and one of the leading voices in India’s national security discourse,’ Kher wrote. He highlighted Raza’s dignified fight against cancer, noting how even in illness, Raza retained his warmth, curiosity, and sharp intellect during their last conversation.

Kher praised Raza’s role as a trailblazer in national security journalism. ‘Whenever he spoke on television, I listened intently—his insights were knowledgeable, conviction-driven, and responsible. Never loud, always impactful. But most of all, his warmth will be missed,’ he added, extending condolences to Raza’s family.

Maroof Raza, an alumnus of Mayo College Ajmer (1975 batch, former school captain), was a familiar face in TV debates. He offered firm views on counter-terrorism ops, India-Pakistan relations, and border tensions. His unique perspective earned him visiting fellowships at Delhi’s Centre for Policy Research, Washington’s Henry L. Stimson Center, and King’s College London’s War Studies Department.

Raza’s contributions to public discourse on defense matters leave a lasting legacy. Tributes continue to pour in from across the nation, underscoring his influence as a thinker and patriot. His absence will be deeply felt in times of geopolitical uncertainty. Om Shanti.
