New Delhi: As many as 151 sitting MPs and MLAs have declared cases related to crimes against women in their election affidavits, with West Bengal having the highest number of lawmakers facing such cases, according to a recent report by a poll rights body.

For the report, the Association for Democratic Reforms examined 4,693 out of 4,809 affidavits of sitting MPs and MLAs submitted to the Election Commission of India during elections between 2019 and 2024. The organisation identified 16 MPs and 135 MLAs facing cases related to crimes against women.

West Bengal tops the list with 25 sitting MPs and MLAs facing charges related to crimes against women, followed by Andhra Pradesh with 21 and Odisha with 17, according to the report that comes amid the nationwide protests over the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor in a state-run hospital in Kolkata and sexual assault of two children in Thane.

According to the report, there are 16 sitting MPs and MLAs who have declared cases related to rape under Indian Penal Code (IPC) section 376, which carries a minimum sentence of 10 years and can be extend to life imprisonment. Of these, two are MPs and 14 MLAs.

The charges include repeated offenses against the same victim, further underscoring the gravity of these cases.

Among political parties, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has the highest number of representatives (54 MPs and MLAs) with declared cases related to crimes against women, followed by the Congress with 23 and the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) with 17, according to the report.

Both BJP and Congress have five sitting lawmakers each facing rape charges.

The ADR has issued strong recommendations in response to these findings. It stressed on the need for political parties to refrain from giving tickets to candidates with criminal backgrounds, especially those with charges of rape and other crimes against women.

The report called for the fast-tracking of court cases against MPs and MLAs, ensuring professional and thorough investigations by police.
The ADR urged voters to avoid electing candidates with such charges.

  • Innovation in government hostels… tribal daughters flaunt themselves amidst excellent facilities

The rooms in Kasturba Tribal Girls Hostel were beautified for living like this.

    Highlights

Case of government hostel in Susari of Dhar district of MP. Innovations in the hostel are beating private hostels as well. Attention is paid to the safety of girls, smart classes are held daily.

Shailendra Laddha, Susari (Dhar). When India became independent, Mahatma Gandhi had resolved to build a country which also included that daughters should study and progress. It seems that this dream of Bapu is coming true in Susari of Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh. Here in the government hostel, such wonderful facilities and environment are being provided that tribal daughters feel proud after getting these facilities and seeing all this, wherever Gandhiji’s wife Kasturba would be, she would be smiling happily.

A different atmosphere in Kasturba Gandhi Girls Hostel

Actually, there are reports of mismanagement in government hostels, but something different has been done in Kasturba Gandhi Balika Hostel Susari of Nisarpur block of Dhar district. With cooperation and public support, a message of innovation was given by providing more facilities than private hostels for 100 tribal girls studying from class 9 to 12. If you see, the condition of government hostels operating in most of the areas of the state is bad, but the girls living in this hostel are being given a healthy, clean and safe environment.

    Rajasthani Mandana and Pichora Painting

The hostel complex is two-storeyed and has 25 rooms. Four girls live in each room. A month ago, in the first phase, Rajasthani Mandana and Pichora paintings were done on the walls of 12 rooms and beautiful curtains were installed on the windows and cupboards. Also, carpet and painting work has been done in the entire complex.

    CCTV cameras for security

Eight CCTV cameras have been installed in the campus for the safety of the girls. A chart has been made at the gate for studying outside the campus. For self-defense of the girls, yoga classes along with karate and judo are conducted. Highly educated teachers take classes on different subjects every day in the smart coaching class. A library has been built in the campus with public cooperation. Private doctors also conduct health checkups every month. To make the girls self-reliant, training is also given from time to time in sewing, painting, making best from waste and how to make traditional tribal costumes. The purpose behind this is that if a girl is unable to get a job after her studies, she should become self-reliant by doing such work.

    the food is always hot

To ensure that the girls always get hot food, the food is kept warm in the hostel by heating water with electricity and using its steam. Sometimes, as per tribal tradition, separate arrangements have been made for cooking food on the local stove and Khapri. Along with the arrangement of food on the dining table in the mess, RO water has also been arranged for drinking.

Use 10% of your salary with public cooperation

My schoolmates are also helping me in all the work. I have collected Rs. 1 lakh from the people at the local level and I spend 10% of my salary on this work. My purpose behind this is that if your living environment is good, then you will not face any problem in studies. – Radha Dodwa, Ashram Superintendent
