New Delhi, March 8: On International Women’s Day, the Indian government celebrates women’s empowerment through targeted financial schemes designed exclusively for them. These initiatives not only provide high-interest savings options but also foster economic independence and participation in nation-building.
Launched in 2015 under the ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ mission, the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana stands as a cornerstone for girls’ future security. Offering an attractive 8.2% interest rate – the highest among government savings schemes – it encourages parents to plan early for their daughters’ education, health, and marriage expenses. This small step towards savings translates into big leaps for gender equality.
Parents or legal guardians can open an account at any post office or authorized bank branch when the girl is between birth and 10 years old. Only one account per child is allowed, with a family limit of two, extendable for twins or triplets. The account is fully transferable across India, operated by guardians until the girl turns 18, after which she takes control.
Required documents include the account opening form, birth certificate, Aadhaar, and PAN or Form 60. Deposits can be made annually, building a secure corpus for her dreams.
Another gem is the Mahila Samman Savings Certificate, tailored solely for women. Invest up to Rs 2 lakh and earn around 7.5% interest, redeemable after two years with principal and interest intact. It’s a safe haven promoting women’s savings habits in uncertain times.
For rural upliftment, the Lakhpati Didi Yojana empowers Self-Help Group (SHG) women with training, finance, and resources to achieve annual incomes exceeding Rs 1 lakh. This transforms homemakers into entrepreneurs, boosting village economies.
The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana delivers free LPG connections to underprivileged women, liberating them from smoky chulhas. Over 10 crore cylinders distributed have slashed health risks and saved precious time for education and income generation.
These schemes embody India’s commitment to Nari Shakti, ensuring every woman has tools for financial freedom on this Women’s Day and beyond.
