SEBI Revamps Document Verification to Block Fake Notices

Mumbai, Oct 3 — The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has introduced a reinforced Document Number Verification System (DNVS) to simplify the detection of counterfeit letters and notices. Effective from September 2026, the upgraded platform now mandates the entry of the document’s subject matter along with the outward number, issuing officer’s name, issue date and recipient’s name. Earlier, verification relied solely on the outward number, a loophole that fraudsters exploited by reusing legitimate numbers on bogus notices. By cross‑checking five data points, the system can confirm whether a document originates from SEBI. If the query returns “no record found,” users can email SEBI for further clarification. The enhancement only validates the authenticity of the source, not the content of the communication.
