SEBI rolls out upgraded document verification to curb fake notices

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has introduced a strengthened Document Number Verification System (DNVS) to make it easier for investors to spot counterfeit letters and notices that misuse the regulator's name. The new protocol, which became operational in September 2026, now requires users to enter five distinct data points – the outward number, the name of the issuing officer, the issuance date, the subject (or "subject matter"), and the recipient's name – before a document can be validated. Earlier verification relied only on the outward number, a loophole that fraudsters exploited by attaching genuine numbers to forged communications.

When all five details match SEBI's records, the portal confirms the document’s authenticity. If the system returns a "no record found" message, the claimant can email SEBI for further clarification. The verification tool only establishes the source of the document; it does not assess the content of the notice itself. Letters issued before September 2026 continue to be verified through email correspondence.

The upgraded DNVS is part of SEBI's broader effort to shield retail investors from deceptive practices while reinforcing confidence in the capital markets.
