Dibrugarh, Assam erupted in cheers as Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal unveiled three game-changing inland waterway projects along National Waterway-2 on the Brahmaputra River. This bold move underscores Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of harmonizing rapid development with cultural preservation.

The star attractions include the state-of-the-art Customs and Immigration Complex at Bogibeel, a similar facility in Dhubri, and the revamped Heritage Building of the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) right here in Dibrugarh. These aren’t just structures; they’re lifelines poised to transform logistics, trade, and tourism in Northeast India.

Addressing a packed gathering, Sonowal emphasized how these initiatives reflect Modi’s dynamic governance. ‘Under PM Modi’s leadership, we’re marching forward with a clear vision of development and heritage,’ he declared. ‘The Brahmaputra isn’t merely a river—it’s our lifeline, our history, and our future.’

Bogibeel’s complex doubles as a modern tourist-cum-cargo terminal, integrating customs, immigration, and IWAI operations under one roof. It boasts dedicated arrival and departure lounges, cargo storage, admin blocks, staff amenities, and top-tier security— all designed to streamline operations on NW-2 and boost India-Bangladesh protocol trade.

In Dhubri, the new setup positions the town as a strategic gateway for inland water transport and cross-border commerce with Bangladesh and Bhutan. Enhanced regulatory oversight will supercharge import-export activities in western Assam.

Dibrugarh’s Heritage Building blends architectural splendor with cutting-edge infrastructure. Officials say it will meet IWAI’s admin needs on NW-2, promote river tourism, and safeguard the region’s rich legacy.

These projects promise stronger logistics, smoother connectivity, and fresh opportunities in trade and tourism. As Assam embraces this waterway revolution, the Northeast stands on the cusp of an economic renaissance, all while honoring its roots.
