New Delhi witnessed the kickoff of the Rajya Sabha’s 270th session on Thursday, marking the start of the crucial Budget Session for 2026-27. Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan set the tone by announcing 30 sittings dedicated to in-depth discussions on the Central Budget and key government legislative proposals.

Radhakrishnan expressed optimism about India’s economic trajectory, stating that the nation is on track to become the world’s third-largest economy soon. ‘India remains the fastest-growing major economy globally,’ he noted, emphasizing the expanding role of the country in the world stage.

Addressing the members, he urged them to contribute meaningfully in both the House and parliamentary committees, which will scrutinize ministry grant demands during the recess. ‘Our collective responsibility is to maximize the productive use of House time to fulfill public aspirations,’ he said, referencing the President’s address that outlined national priorities.

The session will see several important bills tabled for debate, underscoring the need for robust legislative oversight. Radhakrishnan called for upholding the highest standards of parliamentary decorum, discipline, and order. ‘Democracy thrives on diverse views and lively debates, but differences must be expressed respectfully and constructively,’ he remarked.

Quoting Mahatma Gandhi, he affirmed that a disciplined and enlightened democracy is the world’s best system. The House adjourned, with the next sitting scheduled for February 1, 2026, at 11 a.m. This session promises to be a pivotal moment in shaping India’s economic and legislative future.
