In a landmark moment for Assam’s agricultural sector, the state has shipped its first consignment of GI-tagged Karbi Anglong ginger to London. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma hailed this as a proud achievement for local farmers, marking their entry into global markets.
Speaking on social media platform X, Sarma described the export of 21.2 metric tons of premium fresh ginger, sourced directly from Karbi Anglong farmers, as a historic milestone. The consignment was flagged off from the Agriculture Bhawan in Guwahati, heading straight to British markets for the very first time.
This success underscores the growing international recognition of Assam’s high-quality, GI-protected products. Sarma emphasized that it reflects the government’s relentless efforts to bolster farm-based livelihoods through value addition, quality enhancement, and forging strong global market links.
Agriculture Minister Atul Bora echoed these sentiments, noting that this export provides Assam’s producers a platform on the world stage. The state is building an ecosystem that delivers value, visibility, and access to international buyers, thereby strengthening the Assam brand globally.
Facilitated by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) in collaboration with NextOn Foods Private Limited, the event saw the presence of key officials including Agriculture Commissioner Aruna Rajooriya, Director Dr. P. Uday Praveen, and APEDA’s General Manager Vinita Sudhanshu.
As Assam continues to expand its footprint in the global agri-sector, this ginger export signals brighter economic prospects and well-deserved recognition for its hardworking farmers. The initiative aligns perfectly with broader strategies to double farmers’ incomes through premium product exports.
