Air India Adds 78 Extra Flights on 9 Routes Amid Middle East Tensions

by World Opinion

In a strategic move to ease travel disruptions caused by escalating tensions in the Middle East, Air India has announced 78 additional flights across nine key international routes. The decision, revealed on Sunday, aims to provide passengers with more options during a period of heightened uncertainty in regional airspace.

These extra services will operate from March 10 to March 18, 2026, covering vital connections to New York (JFK), London (Heathrow), Frankfurt, Paris, Amsterdam, Zurich, Colombo, and Male. This expansion will inject 17,660 additional seats in both directions, significantly boosting capacity on these high-demand corridors.

Key routes include Delhi-New York (JFK), Delhi-London (Heathrow), and Mumbai-London (Heathrow), with return legs from European hubs and Sri Lanka’s capital back to Delhi. The airline will deploy its modern Boeing 787-8 aircraft for European flights, Airbus A320neo for Male and Colombo, and Boeing 777-300ER for New York, pending necessary regulatory approvals.

Air India’s Chief Commercial Officer, Nipun Aggarwal, emphasized the carrier’s commitment to reliability. ‘Despite challenging circumstances, we are maintaining our scheduled services to Europe and North America using safe alternative routes,’ he stated. ‘Travelers needing to reach these destinations will appreciate our added options and proven dependability.’

This initiative builds on earlier responses to West Asia’s airspace restrictions. On March 8, Air India operated extra non-scheduled flights between Delhi, Mumbai, and Dubai. Meanwhile, Air India Express added 30 more flights connecting Indian cities to UAE hubs like Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Ras Al Khaimah, and Sharjah.

As geopolitical strains persist, Air India’s proactive capacity increase underscores its role in ensuring seamless global connectivity for Indian travelers, offering relief amid potential cancellations and rerouting challenges elsewhere in the industry.
