Revolutionary Retrofit System Promises to Run Diesel Engines on 90% Hydrogen

In a bid to promote cleaner fuel technology, a new retrofit system is being developed to convert existing diesel engines to operate on 90% hydrogen. The system, created by UNSW researchers, offers a path for older vehicles to reduce emissions without complete replacement. The core of the system involves replacing the diesel injection system with a hydrogen injection system, allowing for precise control over the timing of both fuel types. This technology is designed to efficiently utilize low-quality hydrogen and employs a stratified hydrogen injection technique to create pockets of varying concentrations within the cylinder, thereby lowering nitrous oxide emissions below levels seen in conventional diesel engines. The Indian government’s plans to expand eco-friendly mobility include hydrogen processing. UNSW is working to bring these retrofit kits to market, focusing on sectors like mining that already have hydrogen infrastructure.
