India takes a significant step forward with the unveiling of the e-VITARA, Maruti Suzuki’s first battery electric SUV. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the vehicle and launched the company’s new electric vehicle unit at the Maruti Suzuki plant in Hansalpur, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, on August 26, 2025.

The SUV is not only intended for the Indian market, but also for export to more than 100 countries, including Japan and those in Europe. The first production batch has already rolled off the assembly line.

In his post on X, Prime Minister Modi underscored the importance of the event for India’s pursuit of self-sufficiency and its ambition to become a hub for green mobility. The e-VITARA was officially launched at the Hansalpur event.

This step reinforces the Make in India initiative and solidifies India’s position in the realm of sustainable mobility.

The Maruti e Vitara will feature a lithium iron-phosphate (LFP) battery pack and will be offered with two battery pack options, a 49kWh and a 61kWh variant. The SUV will be equipped with 18-inch alloy wheels. Its dimensions are 4,275 mm in length, 1,800 mm in width and 1,635 mm in height. The manufacturer anticipates a range exceeding 500 kilometers on a single charge. The design and dimensions of the new Maruti e-Vitara closely match the concept Maruti eVX that was introduced last year.

PM Modi also commenced the production of hybrid battery electrodes at the TDS Lithium-ion battery plant in Gujarat. This advancement will allow over 80% of the batteries to be produced within India, thereby enhancing the nation’s battery ecosystem and decreasing dependence on imports.

On the same occasion, PM Modi flagged off a freight train service dedicated to transporting cars. Currently, the Hansalpur plant dispatches over 600 cars daily via rail. Three trains are currently in operation daily, facilitating the supply of Maruti vehicles across India.
