The Indian utility vehicle market is witnessing a significant shift as Mahindra & Mahindra closes in on Maruti Suzuki’s long-held dominance. Sales figures reveal a rapidly diminishing gap between the two companies. In the initial four months of fiscal year 2025, the difference in sales was 53,500 units, which dramatically decreased to 12,700 units in the corresponding period this year. The most recent data from July shows a mere 2,900-unit difference, indicating the intensifying competition.

If current trends continue, Mahindra & Mahindra could surpass Maruti Suzuki, ending nine years of Maruti’s leadership. Mahindra is increasing its production capacity to meet rising demand, particularly for models like the Scorpio and Thar. Maruti Suzuki, relying on models such as the Vitara Brezza and Ertiga, has maintained its top position since fiscal year 2018. Mahindra led the segment until fiscal year 2017.
