Indian Motorcycle recently introduced the new Scout series in India, a mid-weight cruiser with a bobber design, aiming to challenge Harley-Davidson and Triumph. The company already sells motorcycles in India, and this launch represents its most affordable offering yet. Despite the name, ‘Indian Motorcycle’ is an American brand known for producing premium cruiser motorcycles. Polaris Industries acquired the Indian brand in 2011, leading to the production of modern Indian motorcycles. Indian Motorcycle is highly regarded in the US, known for its racing history, engineering innovations, and pioneering achievements in the motorcycle industry. The Indian Motorcycle Company was established in 1897 by George M. Hendee, a former bicycle racer, initially focusing on bicycle production. Oscar Hedstrom, also a former bicycle racer, joined in 1900. Together, Hendee and Hedstrom developed a motorcycle with a 1.75 bhp single-cylinder engine. The American manufacturer produced motorcycles in Massachusetts from 1901 to 1953. Production ceased some years later due to decreased demand, but Polaris revived the brand in 2011. Polaris India introduced the Indian Motorcycle brand to India in 2014, now selling the complete range of Indian motorcycles, fully manufactured elsewhere and imported. The product line includes the Chief series, Springfield, Roadmaster, and Scout series. The name ‘Indian Motorcycle’ has no connection to India. It originated from George M. Hendee’s previous bicycle brand, ‘American Indian,’ launched in 1898 to enhance product recognition, especially in international markets. The brand’s name and iconic logo, depicting a Native American, were intended to honor America’s indigenous population.
