The government has decided to increase the registration renewal fees for vehicles that are over 20 years old. This move, outlined in the Central Motor Vehicles (Third Amendment) Rules 2025, aims to discourage the use of older vehicles. Motorcyclists will now pay 2,000 rupees for renewal, up from 1,000 rupees previously. The renewal fee for three-wheelers and quadricycles has been raised to 5,000 rupees, an increase from 3,500 rupees. Owners of light motor vehicles will be required to pay 10,000 rupees for renewal, up from 5,000 rupees. For imported two or three-wheelers, the renewal fee is now 20,000 rupees, double the previous 10,000 rupees. Imported four-wheelers or larger vehicles will have a renewal fee of 80,000 rupees, compared to the previous 40,000 rupees. The fee for other types of vehicles will be 12,000 rupees. These fees exclude GST. While vehicles that are 15 years or older can be re-registered, their age cannot exceed 20 years. The government’s rationale behind this decision is to promote the adoption of newer, safer, and more eco-friendly vehicles by gradually phasing out older vehicles that contribute to pollution and pose safety risks. This initiative is linked to the vehicle scrappage policy.
