Contrary to Donald Trump’s assertions, the withdrawal of Harley-Davidson from India was not a consequence of tariffs. The company, which entered the Indian market in 2009, initially saw a positive response due to its unique designs and powerful engines. However, sales declined significantly by 2020, leading to the cessation of Harley-Davidson’s operations in India.

Harley-Davidson’s exit was part of a global strategy aimed at focusing on more profitable markets. The premium pricing of Harley-Davidson bikes, ranging from ₹5 lakh to ₹50 lakh, put them out of reach for a large segment of Indian consumers, who favored more affordable options. Despite establishing a plant in Haryana, annual sales remained low. Eventually, it was the lack of demand and business challenges, not tariffs, that led to the exit.
