  • After Apple iPhone 16, Indonesia Bans Google Phone Sales: Here’s Why |

New Delhi: Google smartphones, including the popular Pixel series will no longer be available for sale in Indonesia due to new regulations mandating that at least 40 per cent of a device’s parts be locally sourced. This move follows a similar decision by Apple, which has halted the sale of the iPhone 16 for the same reason. As a result, consumers in Indonesia will miss out on these devices until manufacturers can meet the country’s production requirements.

“We are pushing these rules so that there’s fairness for all investors in Indonesia,” said Febri Hendri Antoni Arief, spokesperson for the industry ministry, on Thursday. “Google’s products have not adhered to the scheme we set, so they can’t be sold here.” He noted that consumers can still purchase Google Pixel phones from abroad, provided they pay the required taxes. He further mentioned that the country may consider deactivating phones that are sold illegally.

Febri stated that consumers can still purchase Google Pixel phones from other countries as long as they pay the required taxes. He also mentioned that the government may consider deactivating phones that are sold illegally. This ban follows Indonesia’s recent decision to restrict iPhone 16 sales in the country due to similar violations of local content regulations.

Companies have various options to comply with the ruling. For instance, different smartphone manufacturers established production facilities in Indonesia at different times: Samsung and Xiaomi invested in assembly plants, while Apple has focused on developer academies to enhance local expertise. These proactive steps enable them to meet local content requirements and maintain a presence in Indonesia’s smartphone market.

Local content regulations are part of a broader industrial policy aimed at leveraging Indonesia’s large consumer market to boost domestic economic growth. Violating these regulations can result in significant sales restrictions, making it difficult for local companies to compete effectively against foreign giants like Google and Apple.

  • UP Bypolls 2024: On CM Yogi Adityanath’s ‘Batenge To Katenge’, Samajwadi Party’s New Counter Slogan |

Uttar Pradesh Bypolls: With the campaigning gaining momentum for the Uttar Pradesh assembly bypolls for nine seats, the BJP and the Samajwadi Party (SP) are leaving no stone unturned to woo the voters. However, the biggest challenge for the Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party was to get a counter to Yogi’s ‘Batenge to katenge’ slogan which gained immense popularity in the recent polls. Yogi gave the slogan to counter Congress-SP’s caste-based political plank where the parties demanded caste census calling for ‘Jitani aabadi, utna haq’.

Now, the Samajwadi Party has put up posters in Uttar Pradesh saying ‘Judenge to jeetenge’. Speaking to reporters recently, reacting to Yogi’s slogan of ‘batenge to katenge’, Akhilesh Yadav said, “This slogan has been given out of fear of the increasing power of the PDA (Picchda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak). We know in which lab this slogan was prepared. Then they looked for a suitable face and pushed CM Yogi in front. This time, PDA will connect people and win the election. BJP is scared of the increasing power of PDA.”

    “PDA परिवार वो है जो सामाजिक न्याय की लड़ाई को आगे बढ़ाना चाहता है, जो सामाजिक सद्भाव को आगे बढ़ाना चाहता है। “

    — Samajwadi Party (@samajwadiparty) October 30, 2024

The nine assembly seats will be voted on November 13, and the votes will be counted on November 23. The nine seats are Katehari (Ambedkar Nagar), Karhal (Mainpuri), Meerapur (Muzaffarnagar), Ghaziabad, Majhawan (Mirzapur), Sishamau (Kanpur city), Khair (Aligarh), Phulpur (Prayagraj), and Kundarki (Moradabad).

On the opposition’s caste and region politics, Yogi Adityanath said that those who want to divide have DNA of ‘Ravan’ in them. “Today when the attacks are happening, someone is dividing in the name of caste, some in the name of region and some in the name of language. The DNA of Raavan and Duryodhan is at work in these divisive elements,” said Yogi during a rally.

    — Yogi Adityanath (@myogiadityanath) October 31, 2024

The BJP leader further warned the public against giving any opportunity to the divisive element. CM Yogi said that if these elements would get another chance, they would start goondaism, anarchy, and riots.

The Jatiya Party did not make any immediate statements, but they are likely to express their reaction officially later on Friday.

Two months ago, a student-led movement ousted Bangladesh’s Prime Minister, Hasi Sheikhna, after weeks of protests and clashes that killed over 600. Hasina, 76, fled to India on August 5, and an interim government led by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus was formed.
