  • Onion Sets To Get Cheaper In Delhi-NCR As 1,600 Metric Tonnes Shipment Brought-In: Centre |

New Delhi: The government on Thursday announced that 1,600 metric tonnes (MT) of onions are set to arrive from Nashik in Delhi-NCR via the rail route by October 20 to stabilise the prices of the staple food in the festive season.

The Department of Consumer Affairs said that 42 covered wagons (approximately 53 trucks) with onions, procured by the National Cooperative Consumers Federation of India Ltd (NCCF) under the price stabilisation fund, was being shipped by rail by the Kanda fast train from Nashik to Delhi-NCR.

The department said that it is the first time that bulk transport of onions by rail rake has been adopted under price stabilisation intervention. Once it reaches, the stocks will be released in Delhi-NCR which will substantially increase the availability to consumers during this festive season.

“Railways as a mode of onion transportation is set to gain importance as more destinations are being added to bolster the pace of disposal. Shipments by rail rake to Lucknow and Varanasi will be scheduled in the next few days,” Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare said.

The Secretary also said the recent surge in tomato prices is because of excess rains and high moisture levels in major tomato-producing areas of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Maharashtra.

“The supply situation is set to improve in coming days with increased arrivals from Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh which would bring down the tomato prices,” she said.

The department has also requested Indian Railways to allow transportation of onion rakes from Nashik to multiple locations across the northeastern region which would include New Jalpaiguri (Siliguri), Dibrugarh, New Tinsukia, and Changsari. The government had procured 4.7 lakh tonnes of rabi onion for the price stabilisation buffer this year, and started the release from September 5 through retail sales at Rs 35 per kg and also through bulk sales in major mandis across the country.

About 92,000 MT of onion in the buffer has been dispatched from Nashik and other source centres to date to consuming centres through trucks by road transport. So far, the NCCF has covered 77 destinations in 21 states and the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) covered 43 destinations in 16 states in their onion disposal drives. The government said that average retail prices of onions in major states like Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Maharashtra, Odisha, Punjab, Jharkhand and Telangana have come down in recent days in comparison to the level in the first week of September.

  • A 911 caller reported his friend was killed by a bear in his tent. It was actually a brutal homicide.

Authorities in Montana say a 911 caller discovered his friend dead in a tent in what appeared to have been a fatal bear attack — but officials soon discovered the camper was actually the victim of a brutal murder.

Dustin Kjersem, 35, was found dead in his tent on Saturday morning along Moose Creek Road north of Big Sky, Montana, Gallatin County Sheriff Dan Springer said at news conference Wednesday. A friend who was supposed to have met Kjersem went searching for him when he didn’t show up as scheduled on Friday.

The friend ultimately discovered Kjersem’s body in a tent at a makeshift campsite and called 911, telling responders the death appeared to have been caused by a bear attack, the sheriff’s office said.

An agent with the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks agency who visited the site, however, found no signs of bear activity, and investigators said they soon found evidence of a “vicious attack,” which is being investigated as a homicide.

Kjersem, who was last seen on Thursday afternoon, sustained “multiple chop wounds,” including to his skull, an autopsy showed.

“He was brutally killed at his campsite and we need your help,” Springer said, adding that his detectives were working “all hours of day and night to find his killer.”

No suspects have been identified, and Springer said the remote area of the crime scene, where there is no cell phone service, was making the investigation more difficult than most cases.

“People have asked me if there’s a threat to this community and the answer is we don’t know. We don’t have enough information to know at this time” he said.

The sheriff urged residents to be careful.

“We do know that someone was out there who killed someone in a very heinous way so if you’re out in the woods you need to be paying attention, you need to remain vigilant,” Springer said.

Kjersem was driving a black 2013 Ford F-150 with a black topper and a silver aluminum ladder rack, and police have asked the public to come forward with any information they might have.

“Think of the whole canyon,” Captain Nathan Kamerman said at the news conference. “If you saw something weird in the canyon area, or in town with his truck, please reach out to us.”

Kjersem’s sister Jillian Price called her brother a skilled tradesman and a loving father.

“I asked our community to please find out who did this,” she said. “There is someone in our valley who is capable of truly heinous things.”

  • EXPLAINED: Why BCCI Chose Riyadh As Venue For IPL 2025 Mega Auction | cricket news

As the cricketing world braces for yet another groundbreaking moment, the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 auction is poised to make history in more ways than one. In a significant departure from tradition, the auction will reportedly be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on November 24 and 25, marking the first time the event will take place in the heart of the Middle East. While the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has yet to make an official announcement, sources close to the matter confirm that franchises have been informally informed about the likely schedule.

A Strategic Move to Tap New Markets

The decision to hold the IPL 2025 mega auction in Riyadh is seen as a strategic maneuver by the BCCI to expand the league’s already vast global reach. Following successful auctions in Dubai and a year when London and Singapore were also considered, Riyadh’s favorable time zone, ideal for international broadcasting, tipped the balance in its favour. The BCCI’s long-term vision seems to be about bringing new regions under the IPL’s influence, and Saudi Arabia represents an untapped market for cricket that could spark fresh interest in the sport.

Why Riyadh? The Appeal of a New Venue

Though considered more expensive than Dubai, Riyadh offers a unique opportunity to showcase the IPL’s brand to a new audience. The Middle East has seen growing enthusiasm for cricket, particularly among its vast expatriate communities, and Riyadh’s selection could catalyze this passion, opening the door for more international events in the region. The local infrastructure is being set up to accommodate the massive delegations expected from the 10 franchises, as well as production teams from Jio and Disney Star, the IPL’s broadcasting partners.

This venture also signifies a growing trend in the sports world—Saudi Arabia’s increasing influence on the global sporting stage. With the kingdom already hosting significant football and boxing events, welcoming the IPL auction signals its intent to become a major player across multiple sports.

    Franchise Preparations and Anticipations

While the BCCI finalizes details, the franchises are gearing up for what promises to be a highly competitive auction. With the end of the current three-year player retention cycle approaching, many franchises are revisiting their strategies. The previous mega auction in 2022 allowed teams to retain four players, but there’s a growing debate about increasing the retention cap. Some franchises argue for retaining as many as eight players, while others prefer the existing four-to-five-player limit.

This discussion around retention is crucial, as it directly impacts team dynamics and long-term planning. Teams like the Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, who have relied heavily on their core groups, may push for larger retention, while newer teams like Gujarat Titans may lean towards building fresh squads from scratch.

Riyadh’s Auction: A New Chapter in IPL History

Beyond the auction strategies and player bids, the setting itself is expected to be spectacular. Riyadh’s glitzy hotels and modern amenities are well-equipped to host a global event of this scale, ensuring that the IPL’s brand of extravagance and glamor continues to flourish. The auction is anticipated to be a two-day affair, similar to previous years, but this time in a city not traditionally associated with cricket—a testament to the sport’s growing global footprint.

The Riyadh auction is set to offer more than just bids on star players; it symbolizes the IPL’s ongoing evolution as a global phenomenon. The move aligns with the broader shift towards expanding the IPL’s appeal beyond its traditional Indian and South Asian fan base, setting the stage for more international partnerships and fans in the years to come.

We have formed SIT and lodged an FIR against 8 people, Three people have already been arrested: Chhapra SP, Kumar Ashish

Speaking to ANI a relative of one of the deceased said that his relative’s health deteriorated after he had consumed alcohol on October 15. “He had consumed alcohol on October 15 and his health started deteriorating yesterday evening. He could not see anything, we brought him here to the hospital after that,” said a relative.

Further investigation into both the cases is underway. Meanwhile, the opposition RJD has launched an attack into the Nitish Kumar government questioning how the spurious liquor was made available while there was prohibtion in the state.

“People have lost their lives by drinking spurious liquor. It is very sad and a matter of concern that despite the liquor ban law being in force in Bihar, spurious liquor is available. Every time during Holi and Diwali, it is seen how people die due to spurious liquor.

NDA government is directly responsible for this. The liquor mafias have the protection of the government and as long as they have the protection of the government, the prohibition law will be violated in the same way. This NDA government is not concerned about this. How is spurious liquor available in this way when the liquor ban law is in force?” RJD leader Mrityunjay Tiwari said.
