  • Veteran Director Deb Kumar Bose Passes Away At 91 | People News

Imphal: Renowned film director Deb Kumar Bose, a pivotal figure in the history of Manipuri cinema, passed away on Friday at a private hospital in Kolkata. He was 91. Manipur State Film Development Society (MSFDS) sources said that the veteran director breathed his last due to old age-related ailments.

Deb Kumar Bose was admitted to a private hospital in Kolkata a few days ago for medical treatment but could not survive his age-related problems.

Bose, who directed several Bengali, Assamese and Oriya films, shaped the Manipuri film world with his important contribution. The journey of Manipuri films started with his hands and he won the President’s Medal in the 20th National Film Festival in 1972 for making ‘Matamgi Manipur’ (1972), the first full-length Manipuri feature film. The ‘Matamgi Manipur’ was released on April 9, 1972.

Since then, April 9 has been celebrated as the birth anniversary of Manipuri cinema. Bose is the father figure of the Manipuri film. His death marks the end of an era for Manipuri cinema, which he helped bring to life with his directorial vision and cultural sensitivity.

Born on September 21, 1933, Deb Kumar Bose was the son of the late famous director Debaki Kumar Bose, a legendary Indian filmmaker whose film Seeta (1934) was the first Indian movie to be showcased at an international film festival, the Venice Film Festival. . The cinematic legacy passed down to Deb Kumar Bose shaped his deep understanding of storytelling and artistic innovation.

Despite his limited knowledge of the local language, Deb Kumar Bose embraced the challenge of directing ‘Matamgi Manipur’, a film that delved into the intricacies of Manipuri society. ‘Matamgi Manipur’ explored the tension between tradition and modernisation, highlighting the erosion of family structures due to the pressures of societal transformation and modernisation.

Bose’s storytelling approach was sensitive and subtle, focusing on emotional depth rather than melodrama, making his work stand out in both regional and national cinema. Through this work, Bose not only introduced Manipuri cinema to the world but also left an indelible legacy for future filmmakers from the region.

To honor Deb Kumar Bose’s memory, the MSFDS, along with members of Film Forum Manipur, held a candlelight march at the memorial stone of Manipuri cinema.

  • India Hits Back At Justin Trudeau Govt, Indicts Canada Border Police Official In Terror Case |

India-Canada Row: Justin Trudeau-led Canadian government has made false accusations against Indian diplomats by connecting them to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. In response, India’s Ministry of External Affairs strongly rebuked Canada, stating that while the Trudeau government accuses India of using Lawrence Bishnoi’s name, it has shown leniency toward criminals associated with the Lawrence Bishnoi gang.

The MEA said that India has sent 26 extradition requests to the Canada government, but no action has been taken. Furthermore, India has also appealed in 29 cases where wanted criminals should have been arrested, yet Canada has not acted on those either. In fact, one of the 26 extradition requests includes Canada’s border police – Canadian Border Service Agency (CBSA) – official Sandeep Singh Sidhu.

As per media reports, Sidhu, an employee of the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and a member of the banned International Sikh Youth Federation (ISYF), has been implicated in promoting terrorist activities in Punjab. Sidhu was allegedly in contact with Pakistan-based Khalistani terrorist Lakhbir Singh Rode and other ISI operatives to orchestrate the assassination of Balwinder Singh Sandhu in 2020. Sandhu, renowned for his battle against Khalistani militants during Punjab’s decade of insurgency, became a symbol of resistance to the separatist movement.

While Canada tried to put the blame on India for political gain, the rejection of New Delhi’s extradition requests clearly indicates that Justin Trudeau’s government made false accusations against Indian diplomats.

According to several experts, Trudeau’s compulsion to appease Khalistani terrorists for vote bank politics is the reason behind his baseless accusation that India was involved in the killing of terrorist Hardeep Nijjar. There are over seven lakh Sikhs residing in Canada and the majority of them are voters of the North American country. While Khalistanis may be celebrating Trudeau’s conflict with India, Canadian citizens are beginning to question the narrative surrounding Hardeep Nijjar.

A Canadian opposition leader has accused Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of using Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s murder to divert attention from other controversies and asked the government to posthumously take away the Khalistani militant’s citizenship to right the past administrative error. Maxime Bernier, the leader of the People’s Party of Canada, also said the Khalistani militant who is the central figure in the whole controversy was a foreign terrorist who was somehow granted citizenship in 2007, instead of deportation.

  • Harris asks if Trump is “fit to do the job,” highlighting questions about his health

Washington — Vice President Kamala Harris has increasingly questioned former President Donald Trump’s ability to handle the demands of another four years in the White House as she seeks to contrast her age with Trump’s.

“I’m seeing that his team at least is saying he’s suffering from exhaustion,” Harris, who turns 60 on Sunday, told reporters in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on Friday.

Harris was citing a Politico report that said several Trump interviews that were in the works had failed to come to fruition because the 78-year-old Republican nominee was “exhausted.” A Trump campaign spokesperson told Politico that was “unequivocally false.”

“Look, being president of the United States is probably one of the hardest jobs in the world. And so we really do need to ask, if he’s exhausted being on the campaign trail, is he fit to do the job? And I think that’s an open-ended question and we need an answer,” Harris said.

Harris said it’s a “legitimate question,” adding, “it should be a concern if he can’t handle the rigors of the campaign trail.”

Trump has yet to release his recent medical records, claiming Friday, “you’ve got them all.”

His campaign has said he’s in “perfect and excellent health” to be president.  In November 2023, Trump shared a letter from his doctor of osteopathic medicine that said he had been examined in September 2023 and that his “overall health is excellent.” The letter did not give specifics on his vitals or medications.

“I’ve done five exams over the last four years,” Trump told CBS News as he campaigned in Michigan.

When pressed on whether he had actually released all of his medical records, Trump called on Harris to take a cognitive test.

“Obviously, I’m in the middle of a very big and very contentious fight we’re leading,” he said. “I’ve given my health exams. I’ve also done cognitive tests twice, and I’ve aced them, meaning a perfect score. I want to see her do a cognitive test because she couldn’t, because she wasn’t born smart.”

Trump also said he’s “gone 48 days now without a rest,” adding, “I’m not even tired, I’m really exhilarated.”

If elected in November, Trump would be the oldest person to ever assume the Oval Office.

Harris released a letter from her doctor last week that said she is in “excellent health” and “possesses the physical and mental resiliency” required to serve as president. Her physician, Dr. Joshua Simmons, said Harris’ latest blood work and other test results were “unremarkable,” and that she has no personal history of high blood pressure, diabetes, cardiac disease, neurological disorders or other serious conditions. He noted that she has a history of allergies and urticaria, also known as hives, for which she has been on allergen immunotherapy for the past three years.

In a recent letter, more than 230 doctors, nurses and health care professionals, most of whom are backing Harris, called on Trump to release his health records, arguing he was “displaying alarming characteristics of declining acuity.” Absent detailed records, the letter said, “we are left to extrapolate from public appearances.”
