Ahmedabad is buzzing with anticipation as the Indian cricket team stands on the brink of making history in the T20 World Cup final against New Zealand. Over the past two and a half years, India has been a dominant force in ICC events, reaching four finals with two triumphs and two heartbreaking losses. They lifted the T20 World Cup 2024 by defeating South Africa and clinched the Champions Trophy 2025 against New Zealand. However, defeats in the World Test Championship 2023 and ODI World Cup 2023 finals came at the hands of Australia.

On Sunday, under Suryakumar Yadav’s leadership, India has a golden opportunity to settle old scores with New Zealand and become the first team to win three T20 World Cups. Victory here would etch their name in cricketing folklore, surpassing all previous achievements in the shortest format.

New Zealand, though, presents a formidable challenge. The Kiwis have a stellar record against India in major tournaments, claiming their two ICC titles—the 2000 Champions Trophy and the 2021 World Test Championship—by overcoming India. India did get revenge in the 2025 Champions Trophy final under Rohit Sharma, but Sunday’s clash revives the rivalry.

Suryakumar Yadav’s appointment as captain after Rohit Sharma’s retirement raised eyebrows, with Hardik Pandya seen as the frontrunner. Yet, head coach Gautam Gambhir backed SKY, and the decision has paid off handsomely. Under his stewardship, India became the world No. 1 in T20Is and remained unbeaten in crucial stretches. A win would rank Suryakumar among India’s most successful captains.

Gambhir, a T20 World Cup winner as a player in 2007, now eyes glory as a coach. The stage is set for India to script a new chapter in Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium, where passionate fans await a historic triumph.
