Gopalganj, Bihar erupted in shock as a civil court lawyer faced a brutal knife attack by two assailants on March 7. Madhusudan Mishra, also known as Kanchan Mishra, was heading to his daughter’s house to deliver milk after court hours when the attackers ambushed him near Shivji Upadhyay’s residence in Nayagaon Tulsiya under Hathua police station limits.
The assailants unleashed a flurry of knife strikes, leaving the lawyer in critical condition. Local residents rushed him to the Sadar Hospital for immediate treatment. Doctors, assessing his grave injuries, promptly referred him to a higher medical center for advanced care.
Police swiftly arrived at the scene and launched a thorough investigation. Hathua SDPO Anand Mohan Gupta revealed that preliminary inquiries point to a dispute arising from a case the lawyer was handling. ‘The victim was en route to his daughter’s place when two unidentified criminals struck with knives. Claims of a pistol butt assault are entirely false,’ Gupta clarified.
Eyewitnesses described the chaos that ensued post-attack, with panic gripping the neighborhood. Mishra himself confirmed to investigators that the assault stemmed directly from professional rivalries in an ongoing legal battle. Law enforcement is now conducting raids, interrogating locals, and scanning CCTV footage to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.
This brazen daylight attack underscores the rising audacity of criminals in Bihar’s rural pockets. Authorities have assured the public of swift justice, vowing to dismantle any networks behind such vendettas against legal professionals. The incident has sparked outrage among the local bar association, demanding enhanced security for lawyers across the district.
