New Delhi is buzzing with excitement as Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya announced the inaugural Khelo India Tribal Games, set to ignite passion across Chhattisgarh from March 26 to April 6. Hosted in Raipur, Jagdalpur, and Surguja, this landmark event promises to spotlight tribal talent like never before.
The games will feature seven medal disciplines: athletics, football, hockey, weightlifting, archery, swimming, and wrestling. Adding flair, demonstration sports like mallakhamb and kabaddi will showcase traditional prowess. Athletes from most states and union territories are gearing up, making this a truly national celebration of indigenous athleticism.
Dr. Mandaviya emphasized the games’ role in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for a developed India. ‘These games are part of our relentless drive to give every aspiring youth a platform,’ he stated. He highlighted how they will nurture talents from tribal regions, integrating them into the national sports ecosystem with structured support.
The event’s logo, theme song, and mascot ‘Morveer’ were unveiled on December 23 in Bilaspur. ‘Morveer,’ meaning ‘our hero’ in Chhattisgarhi, symbolizes courage and cultural pride, reflecting the spirit of India’s tribal communities.
Organized by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Sports Authority of India, Indian Olympic Association, national federations, and Chhattisgarh’s organizing committee, the games adhere to international standards. Chhattisgarh’s pioneering role marks a milestone in tribal empowerment through sports.
As part of the flagship Khelo India scheme, this initiative boosts grassroots participation and excellence, reinforcing sports as a pillar of national development.
