Guwahati is buzzing with political developments as All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) faces yet another blow. MLA Zakir Hussain Laskar, representing Hailakandi constituency, has officially resigned from the party on Friday, intensifying the turmoil within AIUDF ahead of crucial state elections.

Laskar made the announcement without delving into the specific reasons behind his departure, leaving party insiders and observers speculating about internal rifts. This exit comes at a precarious time for AIUDF, which has been grappling with disciplinary actions against two other legislators accused of anti-party activities.

In a swift move, the party’s central committee suspended Badarpur MLA Abdul Aziz and Sonai MLA Karimuddin Barbhuiya, who also serves as the party’s vice-president. Both leaders face a six-year suspension for actions deemed detrimental to the organization’s interests.

The suspension order highlighted their controversial behavior, alleging it tarnished the party’s image and violated core disciplinary norms. Reports suggest the duo was extending support to a rival faction and preparing to switch allegiances, prompting the firm response under party constitution provisions signed by General Secretary (Administration) Hafiz Bashir Ahmed.

Just a day earlier, Barbhuiya had publicly stated his decision to quit, citing consultations with various societal sections in the interest of peace and harmony. He refrained from revealing future political plans or potential new affiliations.

This series of resignations and suspensions signals deepening fractures within AIUDF, a key player in Assam’s minority-dominated politics. As elections loom, the party’s ability to regroup and maintain unity will be closely watched, potentially reshaping the political landscape in the state.
