Washington, March 6 – A top Pentagon official told lawmakers that America’s latest defense blueprint is squarely aimed at preventing China from dominating the Indo-Pacific region. This revelation underscores Washington’s sharpening focus on this arena as the epicenter of global strategic rivalry.

Elbridge Colby, Under Secretary of Defense for Policy, emphasized to Congress that the Indo-Pacific has emerged as the paramount theater in U.S. military planning, driven by its immense economic and strategic stakes. ‘This strategy refocuses our military efforts on maintaining a favorable power balance in the Indo-Pacific, home to the world’s largest market,’ Colby stated during a hearing reviewing the National Defense Strategy.

He clarified that the goal isn’t confrontation with Beijing but deterring any single power from hegemony. Acknowledging China’s formidable military buildup, Colby stressed, ‘We don’t seek conflict with China; we aim to avoid it.’

The U.S. objective is balanced power to ensure regional stability, not supremacy or regime change in China. Pentagon plans zero in on defending the First Island Chain—from Japan through Taiwan to the Philippines—against potential aggression.

‘Maintaining an effective defense along the First Island Chain is the primary mission of U.S. armed forces,’ Colby asserted. This marks a seismic shift in defense priorities, prioritizing the Indo-Pacific and urging allies to step up.

America’s unmatched military can’t bear infinite burdens alone, especially as adversaries bolster capabilities. Washington expects prosperous partners in Asia and Europe to hike defense spending and contribute more to collective security.

The strategy bolsters ties with Japan, Australia, and South Korea to sustain stability and deter threats. Lawmakers from both parties questioned balancing China focus with Middle East operations, but Colby defended recent feats like ‘Midnight Hammer,’ ‘Absolute Resolve,’ and ‘Epic Fury,’ showcasing U.S. prowess.

These operations signal to foes the futility of aggression against America’s peerless forces and capable allies, paving the path to peace through strength and restraint.
