New Delhi witnessed a significant step forward in international environmental cooperation as Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav renewed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Finland’s counterpart Sari Multala on Thursday. This renewal builds on the 2020 agreement, aiming to deepen collaboration in critical areas like pollution control, waste management, and climate change mitigation.

Minister Yadav expressed delight over the renewal on social media platform X, highlighting how it will enhance knowledge and technology exchange between the two nations. The partnership focuses on preventing and controlling air and water pollution, including soil remediation, alongside advanced waste management strategies encompassing hazardous waste, waste-to-energy solutions, and recycling.

The MoU establishes a structured framework for ongoing cooperation in circular economy practices, low-carbon solutions for natural resources and forests, climate change adaptation and mitigation, environmental and forest monitoring with robust data management, conservation of marine and coastal resources, sustainable utilization, and integrated water resource management. Both sides also explored opportunities for joint initiatives in circular economy through focused discussions.

Sari Multala is part of the Finnish ministerial delegation accompanying President Alexander Stubb on his ongoing visit to India. Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held bilateral talks with President Stubb at Hyderabad House, where they agreed to strengthen ties in digitization, sustainability, clean energy, quantum computing, semiconductors, defense, and space sectors.

Addressing a joint press statement post-talks, PM Modi announced that India and Finland have elevated their bilateral relations to a strategic partnership centered on digitization and sustainability. This move is expected to accelerate cooperation in high-tech domains. He further emphasized that trusted partnerships between democratic nations like India and Finland will foster reliable technological ecosystems and resilient global supply chains, contributing to a sustainable future.
